Route 172 is South Britain Road, connecting the village of South Britain (and the town of Roxbury) to I-84. If downtown Southbury were to triple in population, Route 172 would be the basis of a western beltway.

CT 172 History

In the 1920s, State Highway 172 followed today's Route 69 from Waterbury to Bristol.

The modern Route 172 was commissioned in 1935, extending 4.21 miles from South Main Street (US 6 at the time) to Route 67 in Southbury. Part of Route 172 was known as SR 455 earlier.

In 1963, Route 172 was extended a short distance south, from old US 6 to I-84.
