ConnecticutTowns: Bloomfield

Overview

Originally an agricultural town, mainly tobacco, Bloomfield is now a suburb of nearly 22,000 people, with four-lane boulevards and office parks. Route 218 (Cottage Grove Road) is the site of the Connecticut General Life Insurance office buildings: considered modern in 1957, and emblematic of the suburbs leaching retail and employment from inner cities, they are now under the protection of National Trust for Historic Preservation.

There are a few points of interest for the road enthusiast:

  • I-291 was to have gone through, connecting the "Stack" in Farmington to I-291 in Windsor
  • Route 189 used to be part of Route 9
  • The tiny bit of Route 187/189 freeway in North Bloomfield, built in 1960, would have connected to I-84 exit 46 in Hartford
  • A recent Route 305 corridor study called for extending the route west to Route 189
