Here are some of the more interesting changes to Kurumi.com, with the latest shown first.
This isn't a complete list of changes; doing that would make this page very "noisy". If you're interested in a particular topic, the results of a search will show the dates of each matching page.
This isn't a complete history either, even on a high level, because the first two years of updates were never tracked; and I tend to prune minor notices that don't sound very earthshaking two years later.

Aug. 18, 2004

  • A third northbound lane opened on I-95 in Branford. (Sweet llama, etc.)

Nov. 13, 2003

  • Added some history for Tennessee's I-140, which might be extended, but not soon. Also some touchups on the I-275 and I-475 pages. Women's college basketball is starting up, and I must have Knoxville on my mind.

  • Corrected, precise opening date for I-165.
  • The CT Links page has some dead links pruned, as well as a new link to a page of existing and planned roundabouts in the state. (The ConnDOT site was revamped as well; you might want to take a look.)

Oct. 1, 2003

  • The 2002 reroute of the Bradley International Airport access road, known as SSR 401, spawned a new secret route: SSR 403.
  • I found an opening date for the Kansas Turnpike -- of interest for I-470 and I-335.
  • Texas DOT has online designation history for what looks like every numbered highway. I got some good info for I-110, I-345, I-410, I-610, I-635, and I-820. Hey American DOT's: if the Texas site can offer this (and its effort is probably greater than yours will be), how about yours?

  • Many other 3di pages have new or fixed links to the huge, excellent Interstate Guide at AARoads.

  • Added some info for Baton Rouge's I-110.
  • After months of delay, more of I-485 opens.
  • More info for I-670 in Columbus, which should be completed on Sept. 19.

August 30, 2003

  • Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, maker of a well-known potency drug, is building a testing center in the Route 34 right-of-way in New Haven. This will inhibit the proposed extension the Route 34 expressway, leaving the highway shorter than desired, and causing disappointment and frustration in commuters. How ironic is that?
  • Added information on routing of US 5 and CT 10 through New Haven circa 1955.
  • More small changes to several CT routes (85, 110, 67, 111, and more); and a slightly friendlier interface to the main CT Roads page.

August 11, 2003

August 2, 2003

  • More condemnation of Cincy's I-275 as a bad bypass route for I-75 traffic.
  • Miami intends to tear down its elevated I-395 and replace it with a below-ground freeway.
  • St. Louis's early I-144 numbering included.
  • Clarified the truncation of I-440 in Raleigh.
  • Added photo of CA 163 interchange on I-805.

July 26, 2003
Where does the time go. Anyway, here are a couple of tidbits:

  • More specific plans for fixing Route 9 in Middletown are presented.
  • More evidence that a Route 32 expressway was low priority indeed.

June 21, 2003

  • More historical info for Iowa's I-235, Indiana's I-469, and Arkansas's I-630.
  • Louisiana is thinking of stitching I-310 and I-510 with a new freeway... echoes of its cancelled I-410 plan.
  • Maine is looking at improving access from I-395 to ME 9. It could be an extension of I-395... or it could be a multi-modal traffic-calmed greenway transit hub. There's a link to an MDOT project site.

June 3, 2003

  • Cosmetic makeover of the 3di section. New appearance, but same organization; and hopefully easier to navigate and read.
  • North Carolina is requesting two new 3di's: I-185 and I-195.
  • Updated information for Georgia's I-520, which might soon be "Georgia's and South Carolina's."
  • Another preliminary numbering: I-177 in Cleveland.
  • Now there's more than one line of information about I-680 in Youngstown.
  • And if California's I-238 offends you, then do not look at these.

May 27, 2003

  • Continuing to digest some of the early FHWA/AASHO numbering information unearthed by Stephen Summers. This time, the Empire State sees many updates, including the x78's, x81's, and x87's.
  • Is there a Utah Highway Ends page? If so, you're welcome to grab UT 14 at US 89, a new photo on the main roads page.

May 8, 2003

  • Updated widening info and a pic for California's I-205.
  • CT 135 won't be widened after all.

April 26, 2003
Fellow roadgeek Stephen Summers unearthed some good information from FHWA and AASHTO. The fallout:

  • Clarifications for I-165 vs. I-210 in Alabama; I-225, I-425, I-270 and I-470 in Denver; I-295 and I-895 in Providence; I-894 vs. I-394 in Minneapolis; I-410, I-510, and I-710 in Arizona
  • Two unconventional interstate numbers originally proposed for I-295 and I-695 in the nation's capital
  • Two "new" but discarded 3di numbers: I-274 and I-364.
  • ... and yes, I-82 was really an original proposal for the Hartford to Providence link approved in 1968. If Connecticut had kept I-82, there would have been no need for I-86.

April 9, 2003

  • More information about I-675 in Ohio.
  • Part of I-181 in Tennessee will become I-26 when North Carolina's part is ready. But there's disagreement on what I-181 north of I-81 should be called.

  • A Seymour developer wants to extend CT 313.
  • New photo on the Roads page: JCT Rte. 146 in Las Vegas, with an I-215 marker close by.

April 5, 2003

  • New scans of Connecticut's 1971 official highway map. In the 1972 entry, I replaced bad old GIF scans with better JPG scans.
  • Evidence of CT 17 on Main Street in East Hartford, as "Tom" would say. Scroll down to "Drive it".

Mar. 12, 2003

  • The Roads page (no, I haven't been there either in a while) will have a new road photo each month. For March: the western terminus of CA 92 in Half Moon Bay, California.
  • Revamped the 3di primer page with a new sample map.
  • Sometimes the best online information about a highway can be found at a diligent opposition site. Such is the case for StoptheCirc.com, who want Vermont to stop expanding VT 289.
  • The Brookfield Bypass portion of US 7 is postponed for fiscal reasons. Sorry.

Feb. 24, 2003

  • $1 million in federal funding is secured for the CT 11 greenway.
  • Yes, CT 80 will be widened near CT 139 in Branford; it was delayed until about June 2003.
  • After Maine is done renumbering highways and exits in 2004, I-295 will be 51 miles long, and I-495 will nearly disappear.
  • Tired of that horrible traffic on Arkansas route 226? Hang in there: the Jonesboro C of C is proposing an I-730 there.
  • Two photos about Mission Boulevard, the Fremont, Calif. street connecting I-680 and I-880.

Feb. 22, 2003

  • Clarified historical routing of CT 75.
  • A Greenwich assemblywoman proposes tolls at casino exits, including CT 214.
  • Interchange redesign is proposed at I-395 and CT 82 in Norwich.
  • Update on I-840 (currently state route 840) in Tennessee.
  • A 4.5-mile tunnel is proposed for the I-710 extension.
  • All 3di pages have mileages from October 2002. Newly updated pages will have crosslinks to similar 3dis (same status, or role, or geographical area).

Feb. 3, 2003

  • Arkansas opened part of its planned Northbelt Freeway, but it's called state route 440 instead of I-440.
  • A 1970s lawsuit halted construction of New Orleans' Interstate 610 temporarily. Added some 1950s/60s planning history as well.

  • Updated information for the Interstate 530 extension.
  • Starting to update the 3di pages with October 2002 mileages from the FHWA.
  • Scan and discussion of Connecticut's 2002 highway map.

Jan. 5, 2003

  • New page: the cancelled Ring Road in New Haven, CT.
  • Minor updates to the I-495 page, spurred by a new link to Scott Kozel's Capital Beltway page.
  • A few more specific projected opening dates for I-485 this year.

Dec. 28, 2002

  • Okay, so the 1998 federal highway log listed I-395 in Baltimore as the shortest signed interstate, at 0.72 miles. But the 1999 log has I-395 at 1.98 miles; the criteria for what consitutes part of I-395 mileage had changed. This happened for other routes as well, so there's some turmoil in the Short and Long 3di page.
  • The CT 9 page gets a new photo, some more opening date info, and a reorganization: hopefully a nicer read now.
  • Fixed a number of minor HTML errors.

Dec. 21, 2002
"But I only read kurumi.com for the articles..."

When nobody's looking, you can check out some photos added to several Connecticut route pages.

  • More info regarding Interstate 759 extension

Dec. 6, 2002

  • Connecticut's Transportation Strategy board has brought widening the Merritt Parkway back on the table. I'd rather widen I-95, but land there is more expensive. (I've also separated the Merritt Parkway information from the CT 15 page.)

Dec. 3, 2002

  • New page: Bulkeley Bridge. Its namesake is actually in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • More information on the cancelled I-197 and I-297 near Annapolis, thanks to Stephen Summer's scans of some early 1980s documents.

  • Raleigh's I-440 will lose the Inner/Outer signing and I-40 overlap to become a conventional east-west road.
  • Pennsylvania's I-276 was shortened in the early 1980s.
  • Remember two years ago, when AASHTO granted an interim 3di designation for US 90? Don't feel bad if you didn't; apparently, neither have they.
  • Rewrites, some 1971 plan info, and its own page for CT 25.

August 21, 2002

  • Refactored Charlotte's I-485 entry; some additional opening dates.
  • More info on I-520 extension.
  • So I-895 might have gone to Fall River, after all.
  • I think I did something more with I-540, but I can't remember what. It's taking valuable time away from my I-865 research.
  • The rest of I-205 in California will be widened to 6 lanes.
  • More ideas floated for Washington's I-605.

August 18, 2002

  • The second Connecticut town (out of 169) profiled: East Hartford, home of the Connecticut football Huskies in 2003.
  • The "Orange Route" was selected for I-475 near Knoxville. But what's that green corridor extending southeast toward I-40?

  • Added some 1978 information for several Connecticut routes: CT 33 (overlapped with 35); CT 63 (old alignment in Bethany); CT 71A (used to connect to 71 in New Britain); CT 127 (was even shorter and less important than today).
  • Improved Route 2A page, including why the Route 32 interchange was only half-built when it opened.
  • List of over 9,400 miles of pending state requests for Interstate system additions in 1970. Includes some valiant but disappointing scan efforts from bad original maps.

  • I-275 (": I-73?"), I-475, and I-675 are also discussed.

May 29, 2002

  • Both Indiana and Kentucky have an Interstate 265 near Louisville. I had considered them pieces of the same 3di, but the FHWA considers them distinct. Until/if a bridge is built connecting them, so will I.
  • For similar reasons, Maryland's two I-595s (one cancelled, one unsigned) are now separate 3di's. I probably should split up I-310 in Louisiana as well.
  • If Asheville's I-240 improvements don't go through, the I-26 numbering extension could be disallowed.
  • Sorry, no flyover in the works from I-580 WB to I-680 SB in Pleasanton, even though that's where the bottleneck is now.
  • Updated info for I-355: more bearish on the southern extension.
  • Updated info for I-580 in Nevada, with a good outside link.
  • Revamped the x81 page: rewrote some copy, added some worthwhile outside links, etc.
  • Restructured the Shortest and longest 3di's for easier reading.
  • Updated 3di table, which still proudly includes Interstate 865.
  • CT 42 was realigned and made safer in Beacon Falls in 1999.
  • The new CT 34 bridge at Stevenson Dam has been delayed, but is still planned.
  • While we wait for CT 11, the state plans safety and capacity improvements to CT 85.
  • Added breadcrumb-style navigation links to the newer Connecticut pages.

May 3, 2002

  • Improved 3di table listing all 3-digit interstates and grouping by state, parent 2di, status, and so on. It is now automatically generated by scanning the 3di pages, so it's much more accurate. A new by-state listing has convenient links to all 3di's for each state. (Includes Interstate 865.)
  • Upgrades mulled for the built part of Interstate 710.

April 25, 2002

April 21, 2002

  • Urban renewal in The Map Inside: The Connecticut Officials. Filled in missing covers for the 70s through 90s; replaced many old scans with newer ones with better looks and smaller file size; added entries for 1935 and 1960.
  • Revamped CT 8 - Interstate 84 Interchange page; better, smaller scans, more design info, and a new scan from a postcard.
  • So how should North Carolina sign I-540 directions, if it's eventually to form a complete loop? The state looks to I-440, I-485 and I-840 for inspiration...
  • Wouldn't it be nasty to install a tollbooth on Connecticut's stretch of I-684? (Don't worry; it's my idea, not theirs.)
  • New type of at-grade intersection is proposed, with elevated ramps for left turns: the Center Turning Overpass (off-site link), which has enough interchange blood to get a mention in the Field Guide.
  • Some revisions to the I-287 page, but you really should just go to Steve Anderson's site.

April 8, 2002

  • Revamped San Francisco Freeway Plan page, with prettier map.
  • Tennessee proposes an Interstate 169 designation for TN 22.
  • Cleveland's planned east side highway would be too expensive; so no changes for I-490.
  • The SSR 490/SR 860 connection in Newtown (aka Wasserman Way) should be called Route 225. Here's why.
  • Four-laning of Route 66 in Middlefield will start this summer. Yes, it can happen in Connecticut. :-)
  • Construction starts on the relocation of Route 94 in Glastonbury, and Route 30 near US 5 and I-291 in South Windsor.

March 14, 2002

  • Some housecleaning in the 3di section: x75's, x90's and x94's are now split into their own pages (e.g i175.html, i275.html) for easier reading. I may have broken some of your links; sorry.
  • To make direct links easier, newer 3di pages have a "Direct link to this entry": a URL to that state's specific Interstate whatever for easy right-click, copy, paste into your code (or a surgically precise bookmark). It makes more sense when you see it.
  • A little info on the I-870 number in eastern metro St. Louis.
  • South Carolina wants an I-174 with its I-74.

March 2, 2002 - 3di special!

  • Columbia's I-326 was never signed that way.
  • Signs are hopeful for the southward extension of Illinois' I-355.

  • Update on proposed routes for Tennessee's I-475.
  • Another renumbering idea proposed and declined for I-664.
  • I-785 won't be an interstate all the way north to I-66.
  • Will North Carolina run out of x40's??? Future I-840 signs have gone up near Greensboro. What would NCDOT do if they run out?
  • Approval dates (thanks Stephen Sommers) for Interstates 794, 155-TN, 310-LA, 345, 395-FL, 180-IL, and 110-TX.

Feb. 17, 2002

Feb. 15, 2002

  • The project to four-lane US 7 in New Milford, between Veterans Bridge and Lanesville Road, is going out to bid. Construction begins this spring!
  • CT 11 has to connect to I-95 somehow... but there was a chilly reception to ConnDOT's Jan. 2002 three-level interchange proposal. (I don't have a diagram yet, though.)
  • In Rhode Island, there's a short dead-end street with public access only from across the Connecticut state line. It's called Route 184 Extension, not from any RI route 184, but from Connecticut's.
  • Added Connecticut Route Synopses: entertaining commentary by contributor Daryl Salem.
  • Fixed Connecticut Exits regarding non-sequential exit numbering on US 7.
  • Litchfield went 4 for 4 on Scenic Roads: routes 63, 118, 202 and 254 were accepted.

Jan. 27, 2002

  • A section of CT 53 was nominated for an All-American Road (a group including CT 169, the Merritt Parkway, and about 85 others nationwide). However, the town of Redding declined the nomination and Old Route 39, within less than a mile of each other.
  • Four-laning in Middlefield and Middletown was approved for CT 66. (US Army COE and EPA approval still required before construction can begin. Price quoted does not include tax, license and doc fees.)
  • Added Jon Persky's fun essay 44 Ways from Hartford to Providence... and a couple routes I've used.
  • Added the official 1955 map to Connecticut's The Map Inside: The Connecticut Officials.

Jan. 21, 2002

  • You might have heard about this one on MTR: New York's I-390 was once proposed as Interstate 486.
  • New Fairfield boasts an Old Route 37 and Old Route 39, within less than a mile of each other.

  • Interesting quotations about CT 190 and CT 318.

Jan. 1, 2002

Dec. 30, 2001

  • SignMaker is back online, if/until the traffic problem arises again. I'm also setting up a mirror site that will solve the problem permanently.
  • I found a posting from 1991 by Bob Goudreau that fixed the month when Raleigh's Interstate 440 was numbered. Thanks to Bob and the other roadgeeks who were online before MTR existed!
  • Connecticut opened new entrance and exit ramps on Route 72 westbound in Plainville, to replace the ramps now closed at I-84 WB and Crooked Street.
  • A little more info about US 6 improvement plans through Brooklyn Center; four-laning and a bypass were among the rejected proposals.

Dec. 23, 2001

  • If the eastern I-84 had been completed to Providence, that city might have promoted RI 10 to Interstate 184.
  • How will Cleveland fans react to a proposal to extend Interstate 490?
  • Maine plans to reorganize I-95, I-295 and I-495 between Portland and Augusta. Along with an exit number restructuring, this rationalization plan should help motorists get around.
  • The Mashantuckets have an ambitious alternative plan for CT 2 near Foxwoods casino.
  • A little more info on CT 313: both the 19th-century turnpike, and the 1960s freeway plan.
  • Major housecleaning in the Connecticut Roads entries; I removed or updated wrong, confusing, or out-of-date information. Much of the 1932-1935 changes have been clarified. Almost every page is affected. The more interesting updates are those for routes US 1A, US 5A, US 6A, 9A, 35, 35A, 63, 97, 144, 154, 154A, old 171, and 198.
  • SignMaker is back up for a few days. The problem hasn't been solved yet, and it may cost me some (but only around $50 or less)... but Merry Christmas. Go have fun with it. And in January, SignMaker should have a new home (still ad-free); watch misc.transport.road for details.

Dec. 9, 2001

  • SignMaker is temporarily offline because the excess bandwidth charges are consuming $10 to $16 a day. I'll post here and on misc.transport.road when it comes back. Sorry.

Nov. 23, 2001

  • Happy Thanksgiving! Hopefully you are all enjoying time with family and friends. But if everyone's asleep, or arguing, or huddled around the television, you can sneak away and play some more Who Wants to be a Millionaire. The US Routes question set is new and improved, and there are new sets for Minneapolis highways, UK highways, and the Simpsons. "You are the strongest link... Hello!"

Nov. 8, 2001

  • Parts of CT 63, 118, 132, 254, and US 202 in and around Litchfield are under consideration as scenic roads.

  • Pop the champagne corks: a two-mile stretch of Interstate 95 will be widened to six lanes in Branford.

Nov. 3, 2001

  • Another way to organize Connecticut route history: by town. This sometimes makes more sense than splitting up the information among several route numbers. The first town covered this way: Killingly, honored for its work with US 6 and Route 12.
  • Planned development in South Windsor spurs talk of resurrecting the Burnham Street interchange on Interstate 291.

Oct. 21, 2001

  • Added the official 1956, 1957, and 1963 maps to Connecticut's The Map Inside: The Connecticut Officials.
  • Connecticut tried out color-coded route markers in a few cities in 1949.

Sept 20, 2001

  • Southeastern Connecticut COG agrees on a compromise for the extension of CT 11, choosing an alignment between two proposed by US Army Corps of Engineers. The state will apply for a permit next year, and if the EPA approves, and the paperwork is signed off, and funding is there... cross your fingers, you may see this 29-year-old freeway extended in your lifetime.

Sept 5, 2001

  • Scans from Connecticut's 1943 Official Highway Map, including the very elusive CT 32A. Yes, that was me on eBay.
  • ... and now we know that between 6/1/42 and 6/1/43, CT 30 was commissioned, and CT 61 and CT 63 swapped some pavement.

Sept 1, 2001

  • The "Route 190" photolog sample actually belongs to CT 19.
  • A little more information on New Haven's proposed East Rock Expressway, which might have been labeled CT 10A.

  • Diagram of proposed full interchange for I-95 and CT 78.
  • Diagram of 1959 plan for Manchester alignment of relocated US 6 (now I-384.) It'll look familiar.
  • More details and alternatives for 1959 plan of (now I-491.) No maps in the public hearing transcript, alas.
  • A few minor proposals have been floated to help mitigate traffic the Danbury-Bethel Connector was intended to solve.
  • New "Drive it" information guides you along the original path of CT 8 in Thomaston and Harwinton. Involves walking, and if you won't want to backtrack, swimming.
  • Clarifications for North Carolina's Interstate 540.

July 12, 2001

June 23, 2001 - Solstice edition

June 7, 2001

  • Bug-fix version (2.3.1) of SignMaker released. Gets rid of the "reluctant HOV text" problem. The biggest bug (memory problems) remains unfixed, alas.

  • Several minor fixes and additions for Interstates 126, 129, 165 (IN), 210 (CA), 440, 710, and H-201.
  • Florida's I-110 may be extended north.
  • According to California's Streets and Highways Code, extending I-280 to the Bay Bridge is not officially ruled out. In real life, however...
  • I was wrong about the Doobie Brothers putting I-580 on an LP cover (bad tip) and where Route 183 ends in Massachusetts.

May 23, 2001

  • New version of SignMaker released. Gives you several neat things including HOV panels (white background), FHWA fonts for all panel colors, up to four route markers per panel, a center-pole option, and a much nicer interface for adding and moving panels in your sign. If all this new stuff drags your computer to a halt, the older version will still be available online.

May 8, 2001

April 27, 2001

I haven't forgotten you! I have some background projects that are taking most of my time. They involve Java. You'll read about them here later.

  • More information about White Turkey Road Extension, aka SR 840. In fact, the entire "Interesting Secret Routes" page has been divided into a page for the 400s, another page for the 500s, and so on.
  • Obtained a 1930 official CT highway map (no scan yet, sorry). Found new 1920s route numbers 155, 159, and 187; and a new all-time route number, Route 299 (now 341) in Warren.

  • Route 68 will be widened near the I-91 interchange in Wallingford.

  • Added two 1928 Green Book scans, from Matt Steffora, showing 500-series routes in Salem and Lynn, Mass.

March 4, 2001

  • New link to a very good outside page on SPUIs; and a number of corrections and updates to the Field Guide to Interchanges.

  • Connecticut Roads has a new, expanded Links page organized as a directory.

Feb 10, 2001

  • 3di main page (no more "3di.html") and Roads main page (no more "freeway.html") are renamed: http://www.kurumi.com/roads/3di/ and http://www.kurumi.com/roads/. The existing pages will stay up until 2001. No other pages are renamed.
  • Iowa plans to extend Interstate 129 to form a northern loop; roadgeeks will start howling for an even number in the hundreds slot.
  • Fused Trumpet: yet another Kurumi neologism, this time for an odd-looking interchange near Bennington, Vermont.
  • A freeway proposed for Connecticut Route 140; more of a numbering curiosity, since Route 140 was moved and the plan became part of the never-built Route 20 extension.
  • Military Highway, which hugs the east bank of the Thames from Groton to Gales Ferry, was until 1943 part of Route 12.
  • More 1930s and 1940s events chronicled in the updated Connecticut Highway Timeline.

August 22, 2000

  • Connecticut Roads main page renamed: no more "ct-roads.html" in the URL. The existing page will stay up until 2001.
  • Connecticut Secret Routes: America's Best-Loved Secret Routes! And I have 89 more of them, all from before 1963, at the Secret Routes List.

August 5, 2000

July 20, 2000

  • Two low points on last weekend's bachelor party (not my own!) in Las Vegas: the strippers were ugly, and I found out first-hand my Interstate 215 page was wrong: the highway was extended only to Gibson Road, not I-515.
  • ConnDOT has downgraded the planned upgrade to US 7 in Brookfield.
  • The state plans scenic road status for a section of US 44 in North Canaan; also, I have a little more information on the 1970s expressway plans.

July 8, 2000

  • America's third shortest signed interstate, Interstate 375 in Detroit, will fall a notch or two: Michigan plans a three-block extension toward the waterfront. (New York's I-895, tied with I-375 at 1.10 miles, will gain sole possession of third place.)
  • While we're on the topic of short roads, see the map scan of SR 820 and 821, two 1/3-mile segments of Camps Flat Road in Kent, Connecticut. These segments are completely isolated from the rest of the state highway system.

  • A section of Interstate 215 in Nevada opened this April.
  • An alt.folklore.urban denizen talks about CT 138.

June 20, 2000

  • A Route 58 freeway... in downtown Danbury? That was the plan, circa 1963. I have the real Slim Shady on the once-proposed Danbury - Bethel Connector, a four-lane expressway that was to connect with Interstate 84.

June 4, 2000

  • Expanded and corrected information for Interstate 491, the never-built highway that was renumbered I-86, as in "Bury I-86" protests at the state capitol in 1970. Includes scan from 1964 state map.
  • Several new specific dates for the Connecticut highway timeline, including exact commissioning dates for routes 103, 234, 244, 319, 349, and others. I got these from the incredibly helpful "Route Change Notice" archive at the CT state library. They only run from 1979 to 1992, however.
  • During 1972 only, Allyn Street and Cow Hill Road were officially Route 319. Then they reverted back to SR 614. Strange.

May 31, 2000

  • Tennessee will reroute Interstate 65 in late 2000, causing I-265 to disappear.
  • Corrected and expanded information about Connecticut's early 1960s route reclassification. The report I found on this also showed dozens of previously unknown secret routes from before 1960; I'll have to get to those later.

April 21, 2000

  • Two new Connecticut secret routes: 854 and 427. Also more information on old routes 488, 503, 607, and 730. Details (but not many) are on the Secret Routes List.
  • In the 1960s, planners thought traffic on CT 17 in Portland would exceed that on US 7 from Danbury to New Milford... and that an expressway was definitely needed by 2000.

  • More background on Interstate 181, including a possible northward extension.

March 18, 2000

  • I'm making some major architectural changes, to make the site better looking, more consistent, easier to navigate, and (importantly!) easier to maintain. The top-level pages now have navigation bars at the left, and a smaller, tastier-looking site icon.

February 11, 2000

  • New page on Connecticut's favorite place to conduct lunchtime affairs in seedy hotels: the Berlin Turnpike. Covers the history and future of the highway, including why it was the single link in a cross-state expressway system with traffic lights.

January 24, 2000

  • New page on Hartford's Woods River Expressway: a 1940s proposal that almost became Interstate 291 but instead morphed into a proposed CT 189. (No, it didn't get built.)

January 17, 2000
Happy MLK day!

  • In Weird Tales: information on a Route A to complement the state's Route B. (Route 35 is now insufficiently weird and has been moved off the page).

Happy New Year! Since this website is a volunteer effort, the first two changes have a Tennessee theme.

  • Knoxville's I-640: I finally have enough info to say more than 10 words about it. Solves the I-75/I-275 riddle there as well.
  • A letter from "Froggie" to TennDOT sheds more light on the I-124 issue.
  • A neat map scan detail including Dallas' elusive I-345.

  • Spider, a two-deck solitaire game, is back from the dead: I made it in 1992, for Windows 3.1, and hadn't touched it for about five years. God bless all that 16-bit code still in Windows 98: Spider still works fine. Sure, there are other versions out there, but only this one is bilingual, features Howard Chen, and has the personality of a paranoid, cynical, flirtatious former coworker. Sorry for Mac and Unix users... this game is offered as is, and it only runs on Windoze.

  • Now there are seven sets of questions to my version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Topics include highways and H. P. Lovecraft.
  • "New" old Connecticut routes found: 32A in New London and Waterford; 110A in Stratford. The 110A find solves the old mystery of what happened to East Main Street between 1952 (Route 8A) and 1963 (Route 110).

  • A roadgeek version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire! Brush up on your highway knowledge and play this interactive game.
  • Earlier this year, Virginia's I-264 was extended to Va. Beach.
  • Two new Connecticut secret routes: 654 and 860. Details (but not many) are on the Secret Routes List.

  • The comprehensive List of Illustrations now displays the size of inline images, and also includes linked images on the site. In short, more and better information on the maps, photos, and cartoons here.
  • More information on Connecticut's best-loved exit, I-84's exit 29, aka SR 597.

September 29, 1999

  • More background on what some said would become Philadelphia's "Mason-Dixon line" between rich whites and poor blacks: the Crosstown Expressway, part of the canceled I-695.

More history and over 40 new routes at Connecticut Secret Routes; f'rinstance, another system of secret routes existed before the current one was established in 1962; and some towns fought the state for 20 years over which state routes should be kept or deleted.

New, much improved paving interface in Me and The Roads (MATR). Instead of a big clunky dialog box, you now can draw your roads directly on the map. You can also reroute highways, upgrade streets, and remove roads on the map. Also, you can now download MATR to play offline. The intersection view is still buggy, though. Details at the MATR page.

Fixed the search engine in the 3-digit Interstates section. It was broken for a while, thanks to some ISP tinkering done behind our backs.

Teach Yourself HTM Programming. What's "HTM"? It's the peculiar influence the Microsoft culture has had on Web page design: the limited 8.3 filenames, FrontPage, Internet Explorer, ActiveX, and all the rest. TY HTM Programming is a facetious primer showing you how to do all the stuff you should not. Page comes in a scrumptious default gray background.
